How did you meet and what’s the story behind your band name?
Rikki and I have been mates for ages, we both fronted Dogs together. We met Carl when touring with Razorlight. He even burst into our dressing room once in the middle of a set, bass hanging round his neck, screaming ‘I wanna be in your band!’. Funny. And we met Ethan knocking about town doing art and design and banging the drums.
The name comes from a Brian Cox TV show. It’s about man’s ascent from the savannahs into space, but also the ape and man in all of us, causing trouble.
How would you describe your music?
Rotten. Fuzzed up. Sleazy. Defiant. Sad. Uplifting. Banging.
What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?
We’ve been writing and writing. We’ve got songs all over the place. We made a video with Sadie Frost and film director Ben Charles-Edwards for our second single ‘Have Not Love’ that we’re very proud of. Go see it on YouTube. It’s mental. And over the coming months we’ll be gigging around London, maybe one in Margate, and schmoozing about trying to work out how to stick an album out.
If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?
Maybe Grimes, when her music was cool. Some electro punk thing. Or Lionel Richie, for a laugh.
What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?
Oh god. It can’t be punk. Not on a desert island, that’d just be wrong. It could be the White album. But I’m gonna go with Fisherman’s Blues by the Waterboys, because it’s full of memories, it’d double up as a photo album. And it’s fitting for the seaside.
