When did you begin making music, and did you ever ponder a different career?

I started making music properly when I was 13/14 (I’m 16 now) with my iPad and I never wrote anything worth listening to but it was just a bit of fun I didn’t really think it would amount to anything. I’ve always wanted to work with music it’s been my life since I was little and I always thought I’d be working in a studio somewhere producing music for other people I didn’t think that it would be me performing, producing and writing.

How would you describe your music?

I don’t know how to describe my music, everybody has something different to say about it so I’m not sure. I listen to so many different genres of music and they all have a part to play in my songs but I guess the main feature of my work at the minute is the synths I play with. I like to make them sound as old and as weird as possible without going too far! My work is a hybrid of a lot of stuff so it’s hard to pin point one specific ‘style’ .

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

So far I have released my first single ‘Devil You Don’t’ from my upcoming EP ‘James’ which has attracted a lot of attention from the likes of John Kennedy at ‘Radio X’, BBC Introducing, The Daily Mirror and ‘The Line of Best Fit. I plan to release more singles coming up to the online release of my EP James in March.

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?

If I could duet with anybody I think I’d have to say Aurora. I think she’s amazing and she started at a similar age to me so we have that in common. Her voice is just stunning and the way she writes is just something else, you can really feel the emotion.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

My desert island disc has to be the self titled ‘The 1975’ album, it has the perfect balance of ballads and upbeat songs and fits every mood. I’m in love with them and could never ever become tired of their perfectly composed tracks and Matty’s soulful voice.
