How did you meet and what’s the story behind your band name?
The band formed gradually, over time. Andreas and Ross, our singers and songwriters, have known each other since the age of 4 or 5 and began playing music together in high school when they met our drummer, Ruairidh. We began taking music seriously when we met Jack and Lewis, our guitarist and bassist, at Glasgow university. As for the name, we just wanted something subtle that wouldn’t give too strong an impression of the band before having heard our music or seen us live.
How would you describe your music?
It’s often described as atmospheric indie, which sums it up nicely. Our songwriting stems from acoustic, folk-inspired music but when we come together as a band we gravitate towards atmospheric soundscapes upon which the vocal melodies can float around. We don’t try to do anything overly clever or technical, although we have a darker and heavier side to our live set, above all we want our songs to be memorable and easy to listen to.
What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?
Last year we took all our demos and initial recordings offline and gave ourselves almost a whole year to experiment with our songwriting. We wanted to make sure that we were totally sure about the music we were playing, both stylistically and with regard to the songwriting. This year it’s basically been about choosing our favourite songs from the set and working on recording them as best as we can. We’ve got two singles out now, ‘Awake’ and ‘Overrun’, and you can expect at least another before the end of the year.
If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?
That’s tough, we’ve never really thought about a duet. A female vocal would be cool. Elena Tonra from Daughter has a great voice, I think that would be a good duet.
What’s your desert island disc and why?
We’d probably all disagree on this one, we all like different stuff. The one album that sticks out is Currents by Tame Impala. Although it probably couldn’t be further from our own sound, it’s one of the very few albums that all of 5 of us love.
