Maria Turauskis
Sub Editor – New Music, Reviewer
Maria has been thoroughly immersed in her own musical world since before she was even born, with her first gig being The Pouges at minus one month from the comfort of her mum’s belly. With a folk musician for a father, many years of violin lessons followed, with Maria eventually advancing to bass/electric guitar and creative music technology, contributing to bands of her own along the way. She has worked in guitar shops and CD mastering plants, as well as graduating recently with a first in Music Culture. It was through these recent studies that Maria first discovered she had a true passion and ability for writing, and began contributing a number of blogs.
Maria was bought up on folk, prog and classic rock, with slices of hiphop and disco thrown in for good measure. In recent times though, through being immersed in the East London music scene whilst at uni, and her current work as a label track researcher, she has developed a renewed passion and knowledge of the freshest new music available, from dream-pop, to freak-folk, to glitch. The Brooklyn scene is a special current favourite.
When not trying to scrape a living through her musical endeavours, Maria harbours a particular joy in all things aesthetic, keeping current with fashion, art and design trends and publications, as well as partaking in amateur photography and maintaining as eclectic a wardrobe as possible. She also enjoys baking, and filling her home with a much physical media as possible.
