Annie Eve – Annie Eve EP

Mollie Carberry

Triangle

When I first came across Annie Eve, she was supporting Daughter in their UK tour. She was completely mesmerizing; seemingly awkward and timid, yet with such a beautiful voice and haunting, heart-felt lyrics. She sang of troubles and heartbreak that sounded as if they came from an old soul, not a 21 year old girl. Now with the release of her self-titled debut EP, it becomes even more apparent that the stunning Annie Eve is destined for big things.

At only four tracks long and lasting just 15 minutes, it is a short and sweet EP, leaving you craving more of the melancholic beauty. Opening track Bodyweight starts mellow and soft with muted vocals, yet grows into something much bigger and more urgent. Annie’s unique lilting vocals weave their way throughout, seemingly effortless.

Next track Elvis is more subdued and nostalgic in comparison. It is one of those songs that you instantly feel like you’ve heard before; simple yet timeless. The lyrics bitterly mourn a love turning sour; ‘I started drinking way before I met you’ and ‘he grabs my wrist and breaks my fist’, mature and troubled lyrics which are completely hypnotising. Following on is Hunters which is a continuation of Annie’s raw talent and vulnerability. Her fragile vocals soar up to falsetto and back down again seemingly as easily as breathing, which is no mean feat.

Annie Eve’s debut EP makes it clear why she was chosen to support such unique and stunning acoustic artists such as Fionn Regan, Bear’s Den and Daughter. Contrary to her awkward and introverted on-stage demeanour, her music is as strong and confident as someone who has released numerous albums. Her insightful lyrics combined with her beautiful guitar-playing makes this EP a must-listen.
