Imelda May

04/05/2012 | Imelda May – Royal Albert Hall, London

04/05/2012 | Imelda May – Royal Albert Hall, London If it weren’t for Imelda’s first comment,  ’there’s a little bit more of me since you saw me last’, I’d be inclined to ignore the fact that she’s 6 months pregnant. It seems irrelevant as she struts around in her trademark heels never missing a note. From the opening bass beat of Pulling The Rug Imelda confirms her place on London’s most sought after stage, resurrecting rockabilly and twisting it in with a modern day vibe, just as she always has. With tributes to Willie Dixon in her version of Spoonful and covers of Bing Crosby’s...

Imelda May – Mayhem

Awaiting image Mayhem is the second major label album from Imelda May, which was released this month on Decca. May has had a considerable amount of previous success in her native Ireland (her first album Love Tattoo went triple platinum there), but her popularity is beginning to spread, with the first two singles from Mayhem charting in the UK, and a string of dates lined up for her imminent European tour. This growing success of May’s is easy to determine; not only does she have a sassy, foxy, powerful presence, in both her demeanour and vocal ability, but she also produces catchy, upbeat songs. The...

07/10/2010 | Imelda May – Oxford Town Hall

Awaiting image It’s fair to say that if Imelda May was singing trashy pop songs she’d already be a household name in the UK. Unfortunately however rockabilly seems to remain something of a niche throwback and despite a voice that’ll make the hairs stand up on your arms, we’re sitting next to empty seats on both sides. With a triple platinum selling album in her native Ireland though, I doubt she’ll be much bothered. Whilst the gig lacks throngs of teenage girls trampling over one another, the appreciative noise generated by Imelda fans more than makes up for it and if ever an...

25/05/2010 | Imelda May – The Anvil, Basingstoke

Awaiting image Dublin born Imelda May looks every part the 1950’s rockabilly star as she struts her way onto the stage in Basingstoke tonight, but all is not as it first appears. On closer inspection it’s clear that whilst musically she’s rooted firmly in the earliest rock and roll, lyrically she has moved the genre resolutely into the 21st century. Tracks such as Watcha Gonna Do, in which she mischievously entices us to “count my fingers one two three, the one in the middle’s from me to you”’ are dripping with attitude. Couple that with a vocal style comparable to Amy Winehouse and it’s no...
