
On the other side of London, The Royal Festival Hall is littered with named seats, amid them is one which simply states ‘be a part of every performance’. Clearly Wallis Bird has been taking note. Tonight audience participation is not optional, and Wallis knows how to interact at every turn. Equally, from the moment she enters the stage, her band joining up with friends, she deviates from the set list to perform Dress My Skin and Become What I’m Supposed To, clearly marking her intent to shake things up.

I’ll confess, I’m a little bit in love with Wallis Bird, so much so I couldn’t bear the thought of waiting for the new album and stumped up the cash for the acoustic predecessor The Mistakes Are Intentional. I was worried then, given the beauty of the former, that the latest offering wouldn’t quite match up, a concern that was curbed within just a few short bars. The self titled album is riddled with layers upon layers of intricacy, with all but one of the tracks from the former album reworked, granting them variation, whilst still holding true to the songs.

You know you’re witnessing something pretty special when you don’t even notice until half way through that the singer is playing a right handed guitar upside down. It’s this random fact, coupled with a second involving Wallis Bird’s fingers and a lawn mower accident which perhaps go some way to defining magic she creates. Fingers aside, Wallis is something of a whirlwind on stage, stamping her feet, tossing her head and singing as if she is exorcising ever last bit of emotion she has to offer. Her distinctive playing style is simply an afterthought, overridden by the humour and energy...
