Having visited Glasgow a number of times over the last 12 months, it seems Haim have found their perfect venue in the city, graduating from Stereo and the ABC to the infamous Barrowlands. The old ballroom is big enough to hold their sound – and crowd – with a rich musical energy running throughout, giving the place an electric atmosphere.
Also, the Barrowlands has a perfect space beside the bar in which to mock up an album cover, with a huge grass backdrop, some deckchairs and some sunglasses. The #HAIMWITHTHEBAND set up was very popular with gig-goers on the night.
The girls opened with album track Falling, with the crowd relatively hushed and captivated, hanging on the melodies and acapella parts. Haim then drifted into current single If I Could Change Your Mind, which provoked a lot more joining in from the crowd.
It’s hard to believe just how many singles, and indeed hits, Haim have had from debut album Days Are Gone until they are played out live. Don’t Save Me and Forever were again highlights, which both involved strobe lighting, similar to the set opening. Brilliant fun, and definitely got the crowd more into the groove, but not so great for epileptics.
Although it wasn’t all about the hit singles – a lot of Days Are Gone got the live treatment, and Este even performed a rap about her sister. There were also a couple of covers thrown in for good measure too. A regular live favourite, Fleetwood Mac’s Oh Well, went down a storm and added a rockier tinge to the evening. By contrast, their Beyonce cover in the encore was a far more mellow affair, but which showcased the diversity of the band – Alana switched it up on drums while Este took the lead vocally.
This diverse theme continued throughout the encore, which finished in spectacular style with the girls bashing all manner of percussion instruments during Let Me Go. And unfortunately Glasgow did have to let the siblings go – despite professing their love for Glasgow, and Este tying a tartan scarf to her mic stand, off they went into the night ready to captivate another bunch of youths with Bassface and girlrock.
