14/06/2011 | Kitty, Daisy & Lewis – King Tuts, Glasgow

It’s always a risk going to see a band play live when you don’t really know much about them. On one hand, it could be great, and you’ve found yourself a new favourite, on the other, it could be dire, and you’ve wasted your time and money and gained only sore ears in return.

On my way to see Kitty, Daisy and Lewis play Glasgow’s famous King Tut’s, I didn’t really know what to expect, other than a trio that played old school bluesy rock’n’roll. What I got was an absolute treat. King Tut’s was the perfect venue for the band, small enough to make it feel intimate, with enough space for the crowd to get a bit of a dance on.

The band is made up of two sisters and a brother, the eponymous Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, who between them seem to play every instrument under the sun, with their backing band consisting of their dad on guitar and mum on bass. Being a family means they have an instant chemistry, and all seemed to be totally in tune with what each of the others were doing musically. The volume of talent on show really was astounding, almost seeming too much for one family.

They opened with an instrumental number, then moved onto some tracks from their forthcoming album, Smoking in Heaven, and some older tracks that seemed to be crowd favourites. In the middle of the set they were joined onstage by trumpeter Eddie “Tan Tan” Thornton, who added yet another layer of amazing sound to the set.

For their last song, the band played an extended instrumental piece, showing off their individual talents, which was one of the highlights of the night. The encore consisted of another two instrumental tracks, with Lewis asking the audience if they wanted more, and the crowding baying back that of course they did. This really was the best atmosphere that I’ve felt in King Tut’s.

At the end of the night, I came away grinning like a fool. I really cannot stress enough how much you should catch one of the remaining dates in the band’s tour if you possibly can, you absolutely won’t regret it!
