When did you begin making music, and did you ever ponder a different career?

I always knew I wanted to be a performer. From as early as I can remember music has been a part of my life and I’ve had a really strong connection with it. I started learning to play when I was 5/6 and got into songwriting when I was about 15. Getting to make a career out of it though is a real dream come true!

How would you describe your music?

Contemporary Singer-Songwriter or Adult-orientated pop! It’s hard to find a word that describes a sound that is a mix of genres. You will hear pop, country, folk and rock in my songs. The most important thing for me is to write songs which connect with people. I try to write clear lyrics and sing so that you can hear every word.

I want people to connect my lyrics with experiences in their own lives and I hope the songs stir different emotions, make you think, but also make you want to sing along, smile and tap your feet.

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

I’ve been touring pretty relentlessly for the last 4 1/2 years since moving to the US. I’ve been to 46 states now so I’ve definitely been able to see a lot of the country which has been great fun!

My new album comes out on April 12th and I can’t wait to share the new songs with people. It’s also available to pre-order on iTunes right now and you get a couple of songs instantly by doing that. I’ll be playing a lot of the songs off the new album at my shows coming up over the coming months. I’ll be performing at lots of places including London, Manchester, Bristol, Portsmouth, Leeds and many more. All of the tour dates are on my website – www.callaghansongs.com/gigs I’m really looking forward to be back in the UK and playing shows again!

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?

That’s a really tough question! It would be between two of my favourite artists – Elton John, who is a huge influence for me and who I’ve listened to since I was really young, and Chris Martin from Coldplay because I just love his voice, and the way he experiments with melody and production I find really inspiring. Maybe we could do a 3-way duet!

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

Shawn Mullins “Soul’s Core”. I first heard that album when it came out in 1998 and have been hooked ever since. It has so many amazing songs on it that draw you in with the stories of the characters and Shawn’s captivating voice. It’s one of those albums I think I’ll never get tired of listening to and will constantly inspire me.
