Fast Five: Magana

When did you begin making music, and did you ever ponder a different career?

I’ve been singing ever since I remember. Though my first instrument was piano…I was probably 9 and my family ran a fruit stand all summer long, which meant long hours of sitting around in the sun or organizing watermelons. I went to the church that was down the road and started taking lessons from the pastor’s wife in order to escape the boredom. We paid her in fruit.

How would you describe your music?

Emotional and haunted indie rock.

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

I’m about to put out my first EP, which is thrilling! I’ve been working really hard on getting the sound that I want playing by myself. Just recently I started working with a band to try to get that same vibe but with a fuller sound. It’s really exciting to see it come to life. We’re playing a full band show Oct 26th at Webster Hall in NYC to promote the release of the record. It officially drops on the 28th. After all of this I’m going to start looking at the possibility of touring early next year.

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?

I think I would do a duet with Daughter. For a long time, I loved bands like The Postal Service and Damien Rice and I thought that quiet female singers just sang backups and counter-parts to the other singers. But now I think it would be rad to have a duet with another quiet female singer and we could sing harmonies and we could compliment each other’s quirks and it would be lovely.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

The Beatles’ Rubber Soul! Because you can always sing along to The Beatles, this record reminds me of my mother, and if someone else shows up on the desert island at least we’ll probably agree that this record is great.
